Quick Answer
No table below: add the room's length and width in feet. The sum, read in inches, is the target diameter. A 12 x 14 ft room takes a 26 in chandelier.
Over a table: the table overrides the room. Target one-half to two-thirds of the table's width — a 60 in round table takes 30-40 in. For a long table, use the same proportion of its length with a linear fixture.
Height: 30-36 in above a tabletop; 84 in of clearance anywhere people walk. Above 9 ft ceilings, add roughly 3 in of diameter per additional foot.
Fixture height: multiply the ceiling height in feet by 2.5-3 to get the fixture's body height in inches. A 10 ft ceiling takes a 25-30 in tall fixture.
This page is a reference table rather than an explanation. Every figure below comes from the same three rules stated above, worked out for the sizes people actually shop for. Find your room dimension or table width, read the target diameter, and check it against the ceiling-height adjustment at the bottom.

Chart 1: Diameter by Room Size
For a fixture with no table beneath it — living rooms, bedrooms, entries, open areas. Length + width in feet = diameter in inches.
| Room size | Calculation | Target diameter | Common fixture size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 10 ft | 8 + 10 | 18 in | 16-20 in |
| 10 x 10 ft | 10 + 10 | 20 in | 18-22 in |
| 10 x 12 ft | 10 + 12 | 22 in | 20-24 in |
| 12 x 12 ft | 12 + 12 | 24 in | 22-26 in |
| 12 x 14 ft | 12 + 14 | 26 in | 24-28 in |
| 12 x 16 ft | 12 + 16 | 28 in | 26-30 in |
| 14 x 16 ft | 14 + 16 | 30 in | 28-32 in |
| 14 x 18 ft | 14 + 18 | 32 in | 30-36 in |
| 16 x 18 ft | 16 + 18 | 34 in | 32-36 in |
| 16 x 20 ft | 16 + 20 | 36 in | 34-40 in |
| 18 x 20 ft | 18 + 20 | 38 in | 36-40 in |
| 18 x 24 ft | 18 + 24 | 42 in | 40-48 in |
| 20 x 24 ft | 20 + 24 | 44 in | 42-48 in |
| 20 x 30 ft | 20 + 30 | 50 in | 48-54 in |
| 24 x 30 ft | 24 + 30 | 54 in | 54-60 in |
In a large open-plan room, measure the zone the fixture will serve rather than the whole floor plate. A 20 x 30 ft great room with a 16 x 18 ft seating group takes a 34 in fixture over that group, not the 50 in the whole room suggests.
Chart 2: Diameter by Round or Square Table Width
When a table sits beneath the fixture, the table sets the size and the room formula is ignored. Target one-half to two-thirds of the table's width.
| Table width | Seats | Minimum (½) | Target | Maximum (⅔) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 in | 4 | 18 in | 20-22 in | 24 in |
| 42 in | 4-5 | 21 in | 24-26 in | 28 in |
| 48 in | 5-6 | 24 in | 26-30 in | 32 in |
| 54 in | 6 | 27 in | 30-34 in | 36 in |
| 60 in | 6-8 | 30 in | 32-38 in | 40 in |
| 66 in | 8 | 33 in | 36-42 in | 44 in |
| 72 in | 8-10 | 36 in | 40-46 in | 48 in |
Chart 3: Rectangular and Linear Fixtures by Table Length
A round fixture over a long table lights the middle seats and leaves the ends dim. Above roughly 72 in of table length, switch to a linear or rectangular fixture and size it to one-half to two-thirds of the table's length.
| Table length | Seats | Linear fixture length | Maximum width | Two-fixture option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 in | 6 | 30-40 in | Under 12 in | Not needed |
| 72 in | 6-8 | 36-48 in | Under 14 in | Two 20 in fixtures |
| 84 in | 8 | 42-56 in | Under 14 in | Two 22 in fixtures |
| 96 in | 8-10 | 48-64 in | Under 16 in | Two 24 in fixtures |
| 108 in | 10 | 54-72 in | Under 16 in | Two 26 in fixtures |
| 120 in | 10-12 | 60-80 in | Under 18 in | Two 28 in, or three 20 in |
Keep the fixture visually narrower than the table — roughly one-third of its width or less. And size to the table's everyday length rather than its fully extended length: the fixture lives with the table's daily state, and one sized for the holiday leaf reads oversized for the rest of the year.
Chart 4: Fixture Height by Ceiling Height
Diameter is one dimension; the fixture's body height is the other. Multiply the ceiling height in feet by 2.5-3 to get the fixture height in inches.
| Ceiling height | Fixture body height | Diameter adjustment | Suitable format |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 20-24 in | Formula, or one size down | Flush, semi-flush, compact |
| 9 ft | 22-27 in | Formula as written | Standard suspended |
| 10 ft | 25-30 in | Formula + 3 in | Suspended, tiered opens up |
| 12 ft | 30-36 in | Formula + 9 in | Tiered, multi-arm |
| 14 ft | 35-42 in | Formula + 15 in | Two-tier, tall compositions |
| 16 ft | 40-48 in | Formula + 21 in | Multi-tier |
| 18 ft | 45-54 in | Formula + 27 in | Vertical compositions |
| 20 ft + | 50-60 in and up | Switch to vertical fill | Cascade, linear vertical |
Chart 5: Hanging Height
| Position | Measure from | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Over a dining table | Tabletop to fixture bottom | 30-36 in |
| Over a kitchen island | Counter to fixture bottom | 30-36 in |
| Walking areas | Floor to fixture bottom | 84 in minimum |
| Two-story foyer | Composition centre | At or just below the second-floor line |
| Above a stairwell | Highest tread to fixture bottom | 84 in minimum from every tread |
| Over a bathtub | Tub rim to fixture bottom | Per local code — typically 8 ft |
| Bedroom, over floor area | Floor to fixture bottom | 84 in minimum |
On ceilings above 8 ft, add roughly 3 in to the tabletop clearance for every additional foot — a 10 ft dining room takes the fixture at 36 in above the table rather than 30.
Chart 6: Typical Size by Room Type
| Room | Typical range | Sized to |
|---|---|---|
| Dining room | 24-40 in | The table, not the room |
| Living room | 28-44 in | The seating group, if it differs from the room |
| Primary bedroom | 22-32 in | The room, centred on floor area |
| Guest bedroom | 18-24 in | The room |
| Entry, single-story | 18-28 in | The room |
| Two-story foyer | 30-48 in | Room formula plus ceiling adjustment |
| Kitchen island | Pendants, one per 24-30 in of length | Counter length |
| Breakfast nook | 16-24 in | The table |
| Stairwell | 20-36 in wide, drop varies | The volume, not the floor |
| Bathroom | 16-24 in | The room; damp rating required |
Three Adjustments to the Numbers
The charts give a starting figure. Three factors move it up or down, and none of them is in the arithmetic.
1. Visual density. An open ring or a sparse glass cluster reads lighter than its measurement, so round up. Solid timber, forged iron, dense crystal and layered compositions read heavier, so take the smaller option. The same 36 in figure produces very different results in an airy frame and a dense one.
2. Finish. Black reads larger than its measurement because a dark outline against a pale ceiling has maximum contrast. Pale finishes, clear glass and chrome read closer to true size. Where a room is at the smaller end of a size band, a dark fixture is the one to size down.
3. Weight, which is not a sizing question until it is. Above roughly 35 lb a fixture needs a box rated for the load; from 50-90 lb a listed heavy-fixture brace box; above 90 lb, structural blocking. Dense materials pass those thresholds at smaller diameters than open ones, so check the listed weight before ordering rather than after.

What size chandelier for a 60 inch round table?
32-38 in is the target, with 30 in the minimum and 40 in the practical maximum. Leave at least 6 in of open table between the fixture's edge and the table's edge on every side — 12 in is more comfortable.
What size chandelier for a 12 x 14 room?
26 in. Add the room's length and width in feet — 12 + 14 = 26 — and read the total in inches as the target diameter. Fixtures between 24 and 28 in will all work.
How do I calculate chandelier size?
Add the room's length and width in feet; the sum in inches is the diameter. If a table sits beneath the fixture, ignore the room and use one-half to two-thirds of the table's width instead.
What size chandelier for a 72 inch table?
For a round 72 in table, 40-46 in. For a rectangular 72 in table, switch to a linear fixture at 36-48 in long, kept under 14 in wide, or use two 20 in fixtures spaced along the axis.
How high should a chandelier hang above a table?
30-36 in from the tabletop to the fixture's bottom, on an 8 ft ceiling. Add roughly 3 in for every additional foot of ceiling height — a 10 ft room takes 36 in.
How tall should a chandelier be?
Multiply the ceiling height in feet by 2.5-3 to get the body height in inches. A 10 ft ceiling takes a 25-30 in tall fixture; a 14 ft ceiling takes 35-42 in.
What size chandelier for a living room?
Usually 28-44 in, calculated from the room formula. Where the seating group is much smaller than the room, size to the group instead — a 16 x 18 ft seating area in a larger room takes 34 in.
Can a chandelier be too big for a room?
Yes, and the two most common causes are ignoring visual density and ignoring clearance. A dense or dark fixture at the calculated size can read oversized, and any fixture that leaves under 6 in of open table per side is too wide regardless of the arithmetic.
What if my room is an unusual shape?
Measure the zone the fixture will actually serve rather than the whole floor plate. In an L-shaped or open-plan space, that is usually the seating group or the table area, and the formula applies to those dimensions.
Does ceiling height change the diameter?
Yes, above 9 ft: add roughly 3 in of diameter per additional foot. A fixture correctly sized for a 9 ft room reads undersized in the same footprint under a 14 ft ceiling.
What size chandelier for a two-story foyer?
Typically 30-48 in, from the room formula plus the ceiling adjustment. Position the composition's centre at or just below the second-floor line so it reads correctly from both levels, and keep 84 in of clearance above the floor.
Should I round up or down between sizes?
Round up for open, airy and pale fixtures; round down for dense, dark and heavily layered ones. In a room at the smaller end of a size band, take the smaller option either way.
Three Rules Behind Every Number
Length plus width in feet gives diameter in inches. A table overrides the room at one-half to two-thirds of its width. Ceiling height adds 3 in of diameter per foot above 9 ft, and sets the fixture's body height at 2.5-3 in per foot. Everything in the charts above is one of those three rules applied to a common dimension.
