Lighting Is Structural, Not Decorative
In a modern kitchen the lighting is doing three jobs at once: making work surfaces usable, giving the room its evening character, and — in most contemporary layouts — defining where the kitchen stops and the rest of the house begins. Only the second of those is decorative.
That matters because of when the decisions are locked. Ceiling boxes go in before drywall. Under-cabinet wiring goes in before cabinetry. Switch positions and dimmer circuits are set at first fix. A pendant chosen after the ceiling is closed can only hang where a box already exists, which is why so many islands end up with two pendants spaced awkwardly — the boxes were placed before anyone knew how long the island would be.
Layout Decides the Fixture Type
Five layouts cover most modern kitchens, and each one permits a different set of fixtures.
- Galley (two parallel runs): no island, so no pendants. Lighting is recessed or linear along the ceiling centre line, plus under-cabinet task light on both sides. A single decorative fixture at one end — over a small table or at the entry — is where character comes from
- L-shape: the corner is the problem. It sits furthest from most ceiling positions and is the hardest area to light well. Plan recessed or track positions to reach it before choosing anything decorative
- U-shape: three walls of upper cabinetry means three walls of shadow beneath them. Under-cabinet lighting is not optional here — it is the difference between a usable counter and a dark one

For islands, the count is arithmetic rather than taste: roughly one pendant per 24-30 in (61-76 cm) of island length, kept inside the counter's ends, hung 30-36 in (76-91 cm) above the surface. Cabinet Colour and Output
This is the design decision with the largest lighting consequence and the one least often connected to it.
Light in a room is not only what comes directly from a fixture — a large share arrives after bouncing off walls, ceilings and cabinet faces. White and pale cabinetry returns most of what hits it. Dark cabinetry — navy, forest green, charcoal, black, dark walnut — absorbs a substantial portion instead.
The result: the same fixtures in the same kitchen produce a noticeably dimmer room with dark cabinets than with white ones. A dark-cabinet kitchen typically needs more total output, more task lighting under the uppers, and more attention to lighting the counter surface directly rather than relying on ambient bounce.
- Pale cabinets: ambient light works efficiently. Fewer sources, more forgiving placement, decorative fixtures can carry more of the load.
- Dark cabinets: plan direct task light everywhere work happens. Under-cabinet lighting stops being a nice addition and becomes structural.
- Two-tone (dark base, pale upper): the common modern compromise, and it lights well — pale uppers keep the bounce while dark bases ground the room.

Counter Finish and Glare
Counter material is chosen for durability and looks, and it changes the fixture decision in a way almost nobody plans for.
Polished and high-gloss surfaces — polished quartz, polished granite, glossy porcelain, stainless — act as partial mirrors. Any exposed lamp above them shows up as a bright reflected spot on the counter, visible from every seat at the island. The brighter and barer the lamp, the worse it is.

Ceiling Height and What It Allows
Ceiling height decides format before style enters the conversation.
