Diameter is the easy half of a foyer decision. The hard half is vertical: how far the fixture drops, how much it weighs at that size, what the ceiling box has to be rated for, and how anyone will clean it in five years. Those answers change completely between an 8 ft entry and a 22 ft two-story volume, and they are what turn a correctly sized chandelier into a correctly installed one. The Vertical Half of the Decision

What decides whether the installation succeeds, though, is vertical. A 36 in fixture is correct in diameter for a great many entries — and completely wrong if its 60 in body drops into a 9 ft ceiling, or if its 40 lb weight lands on a standard plastic junction box, or if nobody thought about how it would be dusted in a stairwell. Those three questions — drop, weight, access — are the ones a listing rarely answers and an installer always asks.

Working Out the Drop
Total drop is the distance from the ceiling to the fixture's lowest point, and it is the number to check against a listing's maximum rod or cable length before ordering. The arithmetic is a subtraction:
Ceiling height, minus the height you want the fixture's bottom to sit, equals total drop. In a 12 ft foyer where the fixture should end 8 ft off the floor, that is 144 in minus 96 in — a 48 in total drop, which includes the fixture's own body height plus the suspension above it. A design with a 30 in body therefore needs 18 in of rod or cable, and a design with a 50 in body will not fit at all.
Two adjustments refine the result. First, the general rule for ceilings above 9 ft is to add roughly 3 in of height for every additional foot — a fixture that would sit 84 in from the floor at 9 ft can rise toward 90 in at 11 ft without looking stranded. Second, listings state a maximum drop and often a minimum: shortening rods and cutting cable on site is routine, extending them requires ordering additional hardware, so a fixture whose maximum drop falls short of your calculation is the wrong fixture no matter how well it fits in diameter. Two-Story Foyers and the Second-Floor Line
Above about 16 ft, the room stops being a tall entry and becomes a vertical volume seen from two levels — and the governing rule changes with it. The fixture's center should land at or just below the second-floor line, typically 8–11 ft above the entry floor. Higher than that and the ground floor sees only the underside; lower and the upstairs landing looks down at the top of a fixture floating in the middle of nowhere.
Three further checks apply to this class:
- The window rule. Where a two-story window faces the street — the common arrangement — center the fixture in the window as seen from outside, not merely in the room. A foyer chandelier is the house's most visible fixture after dark, and a fixture centered in plan can sit awkwardly high or low in the window's frame.
- The staircase relationship. Where stairs wrap the volume, the fixture and the stairwell share the space and their rules interact — drop length in particular is set by the stair's own geometry. That range is covered in the staircase chandeliers collection.
- The upstairs sightline. Stand on the landing before finalizing the drop. Anything visible from above — an open top, exposed hardware, a canopy with a dusty top surface — will be seen daily by whoever lives there.
Weight and What the Ceiling Must Hold
Weight is the specification most often discovered after delivery, and the only one that turns a fixture swap into ceiling work. Chandeliers vary enormously: an open metal frame at 30 in might weigh 18 lb, while a crystal-dressed design of the same diameter passes 60 lb, because crystal and solid components add mass without adding apparent size.

Two practical notes. Standard ceiling boxes carry a marked rating, usually 35 or 50 lb — read it rather than assuming, since older boxes are frequently rated lower than current ones. And retrofitting a brace box means opening the ceiling, which in a two-story foyer means scaffolding as well: the reason to confirm weight before ordering rather than after.
Mounting Hardware by Threshold
- Standard box, under 35 lb. A listed box screwed to framing or a bar hanger. Fine for flush, semi-flush and light suspended fixtures in standard-ceiling entries.
- Heavy-fixture brace box, 50 lb and up. An expanding bar that spans between joists and carries the load across both, rated and marked for fixture support. This is the standard solution for most substantial foyer chandeliers.
- Structural blocking, 90 lb and up. Timber blocking installed between joists specifically to carry the fixture, tied into the framing. Requires attic or ceiling access, which is why it belongs in a renovation sequence rather than a retrofit.
- Aircraft cable and safety cables. Common on very heavy or two-story installations as a secondary support independent of the electrical connection. Ask whether the design includes provision for one.
- Sloped-ceiling adapters. Foyers with vaulted or angled ceilings need a canopy that pivots, keeping the fixture plumb. Check the maximum slope the adapter accommodates against your ceiling's pitch.

Planning Access Before You Hang
Here is the question almost nobody asks at purchase and everybody asks eighteen months later: how does this get cleaned? A crystal fixture 16 ft above a foyer floor collects dust like any other, and reaching it involves either a tall ladder on a floor that may be uneven, scaffolding, or a professional visit.
Three routes, best decided before installation:
A lowering system. A motorized winch or manual lift mechanism installed above the ceiling lets the fixture descend to working height on demand. Installed with the fixture, it is a modest addition; installed afterward, it means opening the ceiling again. Anything above roughly 14 ft with detailed elements is a candidate.
Design for low maintenance. Smooth-surfaced fixtures — glass globes, sealed metal bodies, integrated LED designs with no bulbs to change — reduce the number of visits dramatically. This is a legitimate reason to choose a simpler fixture for a tall volume even when a detailed one would look better on day one.

Common Mistakes
- Sizing for diameter and forgetting depth. A fixture correct in width can be impossible in a 9 ft foyer if its body is 40 in tall. Both dimensions have to clear.
- Assuming the drop can be extended. Shortening rods and cutting cable is routine; extending requires ordering hardware that may not exist for that design. Check maximum drop first.
- Trusting an unmarked ceiling box. Boxes carry a marked weight rating, and older ones are often lower than assumed. Read it before ordering a heavy fixture.
- Hanging a two-story fixture too high. If the ground floor sees only the underside, the fixture is doing half its job. Center it at the second-floor line.
- Centering in plan but not in the window. After dark the foyer fixture is the front of the house. Check it from the street before the installer packs up.
- No access plan. Detailed fixtures at 16 ft collect dust like everything else. Decide on a lowering system, a low-maintenance design, or a service budget — before the scaffolding leaves.
- Ignoring the landing sightline. Whatever is visible from the second floor gets looked at daily. Check the fixture's top before finalizing the drop.
- Skipping the dimmer. An entry runs bright for arrivals and low for evenings. One control covers both, and it is far easier to install with the fixture than after.
